Week 6 - Character Research
I have researched more the happenings of the early 90's, when Porco Rosso was being produced, and discovered that the Yugoslav Wars (in the Balkan Peninsula where Porco Rosso is set) caused Miyazaki to decide on a more serious tone for the film. I cannot find anywhere exactly how the film had changed from it's original format, but the Yugoslav Wars were started around a similar topic of fascism that Porco Rosso revolves around. Marco deserted the Italian air force due to Italy's rule under the national fascist party. Again it is unknown to which extent the film deviated from its original course as a result of the outbreak of the Yugoslav Wars, but it could be possible that the film was given this substratum aspect.
